With RA set to be represented by the men's and women's Rugby Sevens at the upcoming 2020 Tokyo Olympics, the revelation of a home Games was welcomed by CEO Andy Marinos.

"Congratulationsto AOC President John Coates, Prime Minister Scott Morrison, Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk and Brisbane Lord Mayor Adrian Schrinner. A truly fantastic achievement – and the whole of Australia is very proud today," he said in a statement.

“The Olympic and Paralympic Games are the biggest shows on earth, and we’re thrilled to join the party with our Rugby Sevens teams competing for the medals once again in Tokyo.

“The International Olympic Committee Members vote was overwhelming, and it again highlights that Australia is a safe set of hands to host major international events, especially as we emerge into a post COVID world."

The Olympics adds to the growing 'runway' of events coming to Australia, with IOC Vice-President and RWC Bid Advisory Board member John Coates hopeful the 2027 Rugby World Cup could add to the ever-growing list.

“Australia has a green and gold runway of major international events coming to our shores – the FIBA Women’s World Cup and UCI World Road Championship in 2022, the FIFA Women’s World Cup in 2023 – and we are hoping to secure the Rugby World Cup in 2027," he said after the announcement.

"Of course, you will see us in Paris 2024 and Los Angeles 2028 – maintaining our proud record as one of only two countries whose athletes have participated in every modern Olympic Games."

This was shared by Sports Minister Richard Colbeck, who believes it would reinforce Australia's reputation on the world stage whilst maintaining the push towards hosting these events at minimal cost.

“From next year, we will see many of the world’s best competing right here in Australia in a range of sports, including, potentially, 4 of the top 5 largest sporting competitions in the world," he added.

Rugby Australia is currently bidding to host Rugby World Cup 2027 in Australia with a World Rugby Council vote scheduled for May 2022.
